Cracks & Plaster

What causes cracks in the plaster on my home?
Cracks in exterior plaster are usually caused by building movement, settlement, or the plaster drying out over time. On monolithic cladded homes (common in Auckland from the 1990s), cracks can also let moisture in, which makes them more serious than they look. Getting them properly assessed is always worth it.
Can you just paint over a crack?
You can, but it will come back. Paint covers the surface; it does not fix the problem underneath. We always repair cracks properly before painting. It costs a little more upfront but the result lasts years longer.
My house has a plaster exterior finish. Is that a problem?
Not at all, but it does need the right approach. Monolithic cladded homes are very common in Auckland and we work on them all the time. The key is proper assessment and repair before any painting starts. We know what to look for and how to fix it correctly.

Painting & Preparation

How long does an exterior paint job last?
Done properly, a quality exterior paint job should last 8 to 12 years. The main factors are preparation, the right product for the surface, and Auckland's conditions. We use Dulux systems suited to each job, which makes a real difference to longevity.
What preparation do you do before painting?
Quite a lot. We assess the surface, high pressure wash, sand back rough areas, fill cracks and holes, treat any mould or mildew, and prime. The preparation is where the quality is. Skipping it is where most paint jobs go wrong.
Do you use Dulux paint?
Yes. We work with Dulux consultants on every job to make sure we're using the right product for the surface and the right colour for the home. It's an extra step most painters skip, but it makes a big difference to the result.
What's the difference between a cheap paint job and a quality one?
Usually, preparation. Anyone can apply paint. The difference is whether the surface was properly cleaned, repaired, and primed first. Cut corners on that and the paint will fail early, regardless of brand. We do not cut corners.
